Rebated boattails offer many advantages over conventional flat base or a standard boattail. The rebated boattail creates a hybrid to have the best of both worlds. A flat base bullet will generally shoot better at short distances because it makes an excellent seal with the barrel. When exiting the muzzle, the gasses that force the bullet out stay behind the projectile causing no disturbances in flight but lacks a good ballistic coefficient for the longer distances. Boattails on the other hand provide excellent ballistic coefficient, however when the bullet exits the muzzle of the barrel the gasses forcing the projectile, go past the bullet and causes instability immediately. This can cause accuracy issues. With a rebated boattail, since there is a small step, this creates a seal. This seal forces the gasses to stay behind the bullet, creating less instability and improving accuracy.  In conclusion, the boattail creates an efficient bullet to provide an exceptional ballistic coefficient for down range performance. In addition to stability with a better seal, barrel life can be extended with less throat erosion compared to a standard boattail.
